“They were able to come with me in Butte and they were cheering me on the whole time. “They’re very supportive of me,” Hadidi said of his family. Hadidi’s parents and his three younger brothers joined him on his first-ever trip to Butte and his father was a volunteer test grader for the event. Students complete individually at every level. Competitions involve four rounds and the series includes contests at four levels: school, charter, state, and national. MathCounts is a competition series that has been around for nearly 40 years. When I was younger I would look at our math books and I'd go to the back (of the book) and they had all these extra problems and I was like, ‘Yeah, I get to try to solve these,’” Holden said. Hadidi said he’s always enjoyed mathematics and he is eager to learn new things. “Holden is a sixth-grader that is taking the advanced seventh-grade math,” WMS Principal Josh Branstetter said with pride. He was tied for first place going into the last round. Hadidi qualified for nationals when finished third in a field of 88 competitors at the state competition in Butte last week. Among those top-four students in the recent Montana MathCounts competition was Whitefish Middle School sixth-grader Holden Hadidi who next will be heading to the national competition in Washington D.C. Eighteen images of the Cydonia region were taken by the orbiters, of which seven have resolutions better than 250 m/ pixel (820 ft/pixel). Ĭydonia was first imaged in detail by the Viking 1 and Viking 2 orbiters. The black dots that give the image a speckled appearance are data errors ( salt-and-pepper noise). It is in the Mare Acidalium quadrangle.Ĭropped version of the original batch-processed image (#035A72) of the "Face on Mars". Some planetologists believe that the northern plains may once have been ocean beds, and that Cydonia may once have been a coastal zone. Location Ĭydonia lies in the planet's northern hemisphere in a transitional zone between the heavily cratered regions to the south and relatively smooth plains to the north. Ĭydonia contains the "Face on Mars", located about halfway between the craters Arandas and Bamberg. As with other albedo features on Mars, the name Cydonia was drawn from classical antiquity, in this case from Kydonia ( Ancient Greek: Κυδωνία Latin: Cydonia), a historic polis (city state) on the island of Crete. The region includes the named features Cydonia Mensae, an area of flat-topped mesa-like features Cydonia Colles, a region of small hills or knobs and Cydonia Labyrinthus, a complex of intersecting valleys. The area borders the plains of Acidalia Planitia and the highlands of Arabia Terra. The name originally referred to the albedo feature (distinctively coloured area) that was visible from earthbound telescopes. In an interview in 2016, Aldrin told Fox News that by 2040, astronauts could have visited Mars’ moon Phobos, which could serve as a sort of stepping stone to the Red Planet.Small part of the Cydonia region, taken by the Viking 1 orbiter and released by NASA/ JPL on July 25, 1976Ĭydonia ( / s ɪ ˈ d oʊ n i ə/, / s aɪ ˈ d oʊ n i ə/) is a region on the planet Mars that has attracted both scientific and popular interest. However, former astronaut Buzz Aldrin thinks that 2040 is a more realistic timeframe. NASA’s long-term goal is to send a manned mission to Mars in the 2030s. In addition to the images added to Google Street View, the company has uploaded a video to YouTube to give viewers a better idea of what the topography and terrain are like. “The Haughton impact transferred so much heat into the ground that hydrothermal systems, including hot springs, triggered by the impact remained active for decades,” Google Earth said on its website. The asteroid that caused the crater was so powerful that researchers estimate it took approximately 10 seconds to be excavated to its original depth of 1.6 kilometers (0.99 miles), likely “ out all life on the surface of the Earth for hundreds of kilometers around.” Once occupied by a giant lake, Haughton crater has a 20-kilometer-wide (12-mile) impact structure. Of particular interest is the 23-million-year-old Haughton crater, which “resembles the Mars surface in more ways than any other place on Earth,” HMP’s website adds. The project looks at different technologies, strategies and training methods for future missions to Mars, as well as the Moon and other planetary bodies, according to its website. The tech giant worked with researchers who are part of the Haughton Mars Project (HMP). Google has also created a website for Devon Island, noting that the “polar-desert climate and barren, rocky terrain” are perfect for researchers who come here every summer in an effort to prepare for future explorations to the Red Planet. Known as an “unlivable” island, the desolate area in the Canadian Arctic has been nicknamed “Mars on Earth,” as its climate and landscape are the closest environments to the Red Planet on Earth. Google Street View has added images of Devon Island, the largest uninhabited island on the planet to its images. ArsClip is very configurable, uses around 4.5MB of memory and can be used as a portable program or installed.ĭespite its advancing years (it’s from 2005), CLCL is still a popular clipboard management utility because it does the job it was designed for, even on Windows 7 64-bit. In addition to being able to copy and paste different text formats, sounds, images and files etc, you can set hotkeys or mouse actions for the paste menu, configure how to use the Windows 7/8 jumplist feature, disable the clipboard or choose different pasting methods for individual programs, create your own permanent clips or even create Windows commands and macros. Did you copy a website URL a few hours ago and can’t recall what it is? Are you performing repetitive tasks copying text from one document to another? Did you reboot your computer while you had something you wanted in the Clipboard? Being able to store multiple data entries in the Windows Clipboard and have the ability to recall that data, even after a period of time or a reboot can be very useful, here we show you 10 Clipboard utilities that can do just that…ĪrsClip used to be quite basic, but has turned into a well rounded clipboard management tool offering plenty of features without being too complicated. It’s not unusual for you to want to recall something you copied to the clipboard and have since overwritten. Although not available in windows Vista/7/8, you can still copy Clipbrd.exe from a Windows XP system to the System32 directory of a newer operating system and use it. It isn’t that well known because it’s not available from the Start Menu, but the ClipBook Viewer (type clipbrd into the Run box) is a small utility that shows you the current textual content of the Clipboard. As soon as you cut or copy something else, the original data is completely overwritten, all data is also lost when you logoff or shutdown.īizarrely Microsoft actually removed one of the few Clipboard related functions after Windows XP. The major drawback of the Clipboard has always been that there’s just a single slot for the data. The Windows Clipboard has been untouched for years but can be incredibly useful when you’re copying text or data from one place to another. It’s quite mystifying that Microsoft constantly does nothing to enhance a potentially very useful feature built-in to all versions of Windows, namely the Clipboard. Overall, it's a wonderful story which I think everyone should experience at least once it made me cry, laugh, scream, it created such a wide array of emotions which few works of fiction have ever managed to accomplish. My main concerns would be over how well the various side-features and control panel settings work, and whether there are any compatibility issues with anything.I've answered this question before so you should take a look at that post. So performance of the cards may not be much of a concern. I imagine there will probably be certain titles where Intel's cards perform worse than the similarly-priced competition, but as long as performance is still reasonable in those titles, while being better in most others, that shouldn't hold them back too much. AMD's offerings, while decent, weren't exactly leading in terms of high-end performance at the time of their launch, but they priced the hardware accordingly and gave more hardware for the money to make up for it, allowing their products to be very competitive despite their limitations. It's actually kind of similar to what we saw with AMD's Polaris cards, or with the early generations of Ryzen CPUs. It's possible that they could even outperform the competition at similar price points in most older titles, making up for the unoptimized drivers by providing more hardware with lower or nonexistent profit margins to help them make a good first impression. According to Intel, they plan to price the cards based on how they perform in DX9/11 titles, so one could arguably look at their much better DX12/Vulcan performance as a bonus relative to the competition. I hope they release them soon.īasically, Intel's lack of experience in the discrete GPU driver space will prevent their GPUs from being competitive with older APIs for quite some time. They could easily still be "competitive" in games utilizing those older APIs, even if performance won't be where it could be. It gives people an opportunity to take a smaller chance (in terms of money) to check them out and increases the userbase to better detect problems to be solved. Reviews will give more information and buyers can then better choose based on the performance value in the games they play and expect to play.Įdit: I also think that Intel releasing cheaper, smaller gpus initially works out well with these deficiencies. Looks like Intel will be similar to AMD in this, only with the driver deficiencies and improvements being relatively larger. Some like AMD gpus better because they are a better value in the games, settings they play, and others who like different games, settings that are a better performance value with Nvidia can't understand why somebody would prefer AMD. More specific information would be better, but we will get that with reviews.ĪMD and Nvidia already have performance differentials in different APIs with AMD still lagging, but improving recently with the older ones on their RDNA2 arch. It is good for that information to come out. even under legal scrutiny from Joe the Legal Weasel. Moreover, many elemental ores are utilized in the Apple Pencil’s production process. In terms of the antenna, it is attached to a silicon circuit board through a copper wire and picks up amplitude modulation signals (Woodford, 2021). This ultimately uses up fuel and releases waste into the atmosphere. The lithium ion battery goes through a long production process as time is needed to extract the ore, and the assembling of the battery requires transportation since the manufacturing is in South Korea. In addition to the lithium ore, the battery is made up of polymer binders, conductive additives, and solvents (N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP)) which are coated with collector foil to create electrode coating (Daniel, 2015). When researching the lithium ion battery, the lithium ore is mined in China or Argentina and is eventually produced into a battery in South Korea (Athwal, 2020). These include a 3.82 V, 0.329 Wh lithium ion battery, 32-bit RISC ARM-based Cortex-M3 MCU, aluminum, gold, bluetooth chip, five anonymous chips, circuit board, wireless antenna, touch sensors, and lightning connector (inside the magnetic cap) (Detwiler, 2015). Since thermoplastic is similar to plastic, it is essentially difficult to dispose of and can take years to decompose.Īdditionally, many primary and secondary materials are assembled to form the advanced stylus technology. Yet, these materials are difficult to decompose and are essentially harmful to the environment. Thermoplastic goes through a similar production process as regular plastic, where a group of polymers are melted through heat to be processed in a heat-softened state or liquid state (i.e. On the other hand, the writing tip is composed of capacitive polypropylene, a type of thermoplastic that is recyclable and easily remolded and reheated for other purposes (“Apple Pencil (Tips),” 2021). The ethane and propane are then converted into ethylene and propylene through a high heating process called “cracking” and are combined to create polymers which eventually form into plastic (“How are Plastics Made?” n.d). To produce the plastic, raw materials such as coal, crude oil, and natural gas are refined in a production process to obtain ethane and propane which are the main plastic building blocks (“How is Plastic Made?” 2020). For instance, in terms of the materials on the exterior of the Apple Pencil, it is made of plastic which is generally recyclable but not biodegradable (Detwiler, 2015). When analyzing each material individually, it appears that Apple’s goal of sustainability has been difficult to meet due to the majority of the Apple Pencil’s materials being non-environmentally friendly. There are many materials used to create the first generation Apple Pencil which was released in 2015. The first generation Apple Pencil is made of common tech materials - plastic, metals, batteries, bluetooth chips, silicon - and Apple hopes to reduce environmental damage (as the majority of the non-recyclable secondary materials in the Apple Pencil tend to be environmentally harmful during manufacturing and after disposal) by producing high quality, recyclable products in renewable energy facilities that meet consumer demand and sustainability in the future (Athwal, 2020). They end up as waste products that are difficult to dispose of. More specifically, the Apple Pencil utilizes materials that are mostly non-recyclable and/or not biodegradable. Unfortunately, consumers are unaware of what goes into the production of the popular writing tool and how it could potentially be damaging to the environment. The popularity of this product has grown due to its bluetooth and pressure sensors, along with its overall ability to facilitate handwriting on electronic devices. The Apple Pencil is an advanced stylus that can be used on certain Apple products. So far, the Apple Pencil has two versions, a first and second generation. One popular Apple product, the first generation Apple Pencil, has been utilized by many consumers, especially students. Apple, one of the most recognized companies in the world, has contributed immensely in the information technology industry and has been innovating their products for better efficiency. Over time, society has become more dependent on technology, and consumers have become largely attracted to new electronic products such as electric cars, smartphones, tablets, and virtual reality. One thing that must be noted is the increased weight. One of the nicest bonuses is that because the panels are the same size, you can actually just use Pixel 6a screen protectors this year too – I recommend this three-pack. The combination of the higher refresh rate and increased brightness makes it one of the most important upgrades for a Pixel A-series smartphone since its inception. The caveat here is that the Pixel 6a screen is clocked at 60Hz while the Pixel 7a now has a 90Hz screen. Each smartphone is still rated at 1080p – which is fine for a screen of this size. Thanks to a modest f/4 aperture rating and clever design-work, this 17mm full-frame compatible lens is outrageously small and lightweight for its type, but impeccably engineered and a high-flyer in terms of image quality. This Sigma is something altogether different. Think ultra-wide-angle lenses and you’re probably thinking of hefty beasts that weigh you down. That’s certainly not the case with many recent lenses designed for mirrorless cameras, some of which are basically unusable without in-camera correction. The Sigma definitely isn’t a zero-distortion lens but its images are generally entirely usable without having to rely on automatic in-camera correction. You’re unlikely ever to need to use automatic in-camera correction for this.Īs with sharpness, shooting test charts at close range can make the distortion of ultra-wide-angle lenses look worse than it really is. Levels of lateral chromatic aberration are pretty negligible even at the extreme edges and corners of the image frame, at all aperture settings. Either way, automatic in-camera corrections are generally available for both distortion and vignetting, should you wish to use them. Vignetting can be very noticeable at f/4 and f/5.6 but that can add to creative expression. Although the Sigma produced obvious barrel distortion in our lab-tests, which are based on shooting test charts from a necessarily close distance, it fared pretty well in real-world shooting, with only a modicum of distortion. Ultra-wide lenses are also often notorious for very noticeable barrel distortion. The lens is also very good at keeping ghosting and flare to a minimum, which is a big plus point for landscape and cityscape photography, where the extra-large field of view typically pulls in lots of sky with light entering at oblique angles. It’s super-sharp across pretty much the entire frame and holds up really well into the extreme corners.Īnother impressive aspect of performance is that color fringing is very negligible, with almost no lateral chromatic aberration even at the corners of the image frame. We’ve seen plenty of ultra-wide-angle lenses that are pretty sharp at the center of the frame but lackluster towards the edges and corners. For creative expression, there’s the bonus of being able to exaggerate perspective, so that you can make foreground objects really stand out against a rapidly receding backdrop. It also works well for vlogging, so you can put yourself in the picture within the context of the surrounding scene. It’s two f/stops slower, at f/4, but gives a really generous field of view that’s ideal for expansive landscapes and cityscapes. The 17mm is currently the most wide-angle in the line-up. We’ve already been impressed with Sigma’s 20mm, 35mm, 50mm and 65mm DG DN | C lenses in the series, all of which have a pretty nippy f/2 aperture rating. |
